Kolme Kruunua – A Timeless Helsinki Classic

Finnish Classic Cuisine at Its Best

Kolme Kruunua is best known for its classic Finnish dishes, such as meatballs, pyttipannu (hash), and fried Baltic herring, which many consider the best in the city. The restaurant has maintained its traditional atmosphere, attracting customers from all generations from young adults to seniors reminiscing about childhood visits.

In the 1990s, a bar counter was added, but the original interior, including wood paneling, vintage lighting, and decorative glass surfaces, has remained unchanged. Kolme Kruunua is a true gem of Helsinki’s restaurant scene, offering a unique blend of history, tradition, and delicious food.

Echoes of History and Stories Passed Down Through Generations.

Kolme Kruunua ( Three Crowns) is one of Helsinki’s most well-known and traditional neighborhood restaurants, with a history dating back to 1952. That year, restaurateur Irja Örn (1910–1992) and her husband decided to transform their café, Liisan Baari, into a full-service restaurant. This marked the birth of Kolme Kruunua, which has since remained one of the city’s most beloved dining spots.

The restaurant’s interior plays a major role in its charm. Finnish artist Emil Ruokolainen (1895–1968) designed and created the décor, including the beautifully polished mirror on the back wall. The stained-glass windows, crafted by artist Fritz Hilbert (1898–1981), add to its distinctive atmosphere. These details have remained largely unchanged over the decades, making Kolme Kruunua a unique journey into the past.
